Are Dental Implants Really the Best Solution?

Are dental implants really the best solution for replacing missing teeth? We get this question a lot. Since this technology is relatively new, many people are still unsure of how implants work. They only know that it is new and may be more effective than traditional options like dentures.

For that reason, we answer a lot of questions from patients wanting to know if implants are effective or if it is just a bunch of hype.

Dental implants truly are the best way to replace missing teeth

To set the issue at rest, let us be clear, a dental implant is an extremely effective way to replace a missing tooth. A dental implant is the only solution that gives the patient a new root system and tooth. The implant portion is actually a titanium post that we insert under the gums and implant into the jaw. Since the body responds to titanium like it would to a natural tooth root, the body deposits bone around the post so that it remains securely in place.

By doing so, this replacement tooth has the same level of durability and functionality that a natural one does. This makes it superior to other solutions like dentures or a dental bridge.

Aesthetics versus functionality

When it comes to the aesthetics of other replacement solutions, dentures and dental bridges have come a long way. They look more natural than ever and, if done correctly, can look like natural teeth. A dental implant will look more like natural teeth than most other options. Still, patients who only have a concern about aesthetics will probably prefer a bridge or dentures.

When it comes to functionality, an implant is different. Implants will function better than anything else because it is more secure. A dental implant is as secure as a natural tooth. Thus, it is possible for patients to eat whatever they want, bite down without concern and be active without worrying about their teeth. This is not the case with dentures. Even a dental bridge does not provide the same level of durability.

Implants are not for everyone

With all of their benefits, it would be easy to assume that everyone should get implants. This is actually not the case. In some scenarios, they are not the right solution. For example, someone who needs to replace teeth quickly will benefit from wearing dentures, even temporarily.

Someone who does not respond well to surgery, especially for someone with diabetes, may be better served by wearing a dental bridge. Each patient is different, so we will make a recommendation after conducting an examination and discussing health history with the patient.

They are ideal

If dental implants are the best solution for a patient, we will be happy to place them. This is an excellent solution for missing teeth and one that we highly recommend. They make it possible for patients to enjoy a full set of teeth in ways that are impossible with other solutions. To learn more about the process of having implants placed or to find out if this is right for you, call and schedule an appointment.
